Three-wheeled motorcycles also known as trikes, have undergone a fascinating evolution since their inception, evolving significantly in terms of design, technology, popularity and owners over the years.

The concept of modern motorcycle trikes traces back to the early 1990’s when various inventors experimented with adding an extra wheel to motorcycles for stability.

Design Evolution

In the early 1900’s sidecars were very popular for adding cargo and passengers to a motorcycle. They were often used in wars for utility purposes of a lightweight vehicle to move people and gear. But they were challenging to drive for regular street use back home. Also, their safety left a lot to be desired outside military use

Harley Davidson and Indian motorcycles both produced three-wheeled trikes from the factory back in the early 1930’s used for utility purposes generally, but both had ceased production by the early 1970’s.

In the early 1970’s VW powered trikes were popular as a DIY kit. People enjoyed building something simple that they could use to get out and enjoy the open air feeling of a motorcycle with the stability of a car. These were conversion kits that used a VW Beetle engine, transmission and rear suspension attached to a purpose-built trike frame utilizing a motorcycle type front fork to steer.

Then in the early 1990’s companies formed and sidecar companies started producing trike conversion kits. Most were a narrowed version of an automotive rear axle connected to the shaft driven motorcycle. That was the first trike conversion kit adapted to the Honda Gold Wing. Soon after, belt driven differentials were developed for the Harley Davidson models.

The only company that crossed over from manufacturing VW powered trikes to modifying motorcycles with an independent rear suspension was, then known as The Trike Shop which is known as Roadsmith trikes today. Sidecar companies transitioned to trike conversions based on their popularity and superior handling.

Over time, trikes underwent significant design advancements. Manufacturers continued to build bigger and bigger bikes that lent themselves to being converted to trikes even better. Early models of some manufacturers had rudimentary suspension systems and manual transmissions. However, as technology progressed, modern trikes began to boast sophisticated suspension systems, comfort options like auxiliary fuel tanks, air ride, trailer hitches, large trunks, advanced braking systems and improved handling overall.

Technological Advancements

The evolution of trikes has been closely tied to advancements in technology. Early models primarily utilized conventional motorcycle engines and transmissions. However, contemporary trikes feature powerful engines, integrated braking systems with ABS, reverse systems and even automatic shifting transmissions

Popularity and Acceptance

Trikes have gained considerable popularity over the years, appealing to a wide demographic of riders. Their stability and ease of handling, especially for those uncomfortable with two-wheeled motorcycles, have contributed to their increasing acceptance among riders of varying experience levels. Additionally, trikes have garnered attention from motorcycle enthusiasts seeking a unique and distinctive riding experience.

Harley Davidson began building complete built trikes again in 2009 again and have been incredibly popular due to their convenience of operation and ownership. As the trike conversion companies are thriving with people converting their own bikes to fit their current wants and needs.

Luxury Features

When converting a bike to a trike there is an opportunity to add many luxury options to the trike. Roadsmith offers steering modifications for easier steering, auxiliary fuels tanks for longer touring rides for most models, air ride/adjustable suspension, running boards, much more storage and a built-in trailer hitch.

The evolution of trikes showcases a remarkable journey marked by technological advancements, diverse designs and growing popularity. From their humble beginnings as modified motorcycles to the current range of sophisticated, purpose-built models, trikes continue to captivate riders worldwide, offering a blend of stability, comfort and distinctiveness in the realm of motorcycling.
